How much do you throw out when you move home?
We all know that moving home and packing up our belongings can be a stressful process, but what do you do if you get fed up of packing or just want to reduce the amount of items you’re taking with you when you move?
It turns out many of us just throw things out. Circular Online recently shared the findings of research conducted by SUEZ, which found that on average Brits throw out £83.78 worth of belongings during a move, which collectively adds up to over £150 million of items being thrown out just during the moving process each year.
However, the research also found that many people (51 per cent) want to extend the life of their household items, but they are just unsure of how best to do so. What’s more, almost all of the people who responded to the survey (91 per cent) said they seek out pre-loved items when replacing or buying new items for their homes.

For those of you who are looking to declutter your home ahead of a move, particularly if you are downsizing, some advice from an article published on Kiplinger could help if you’re intending to tackle this task alone.
The first and perhaps most important is not to try and do everything in one day. The best approach is to pick one part of your home (like your desk or even a single cupboard in the kitchen) to “declutter” and start there. By starting small you’ll get into the swing of decluttering and this will help you continue the process.
When you are considering what to get rid of and what to keep, a good question to ask yourself is when you last used a particular item. If the answer is more than a year ago, chances are that it’s safe to get rid of it.

Another top tip is to consider bringing in outside help, like our experts at Beehive Clearance, when you start getting stuck. Not only can an objective, outside point of view help you see things more clearly, but we can also do the heavy lifting (literally) and take away furniture and other large or heavy items that you won’t need when you move.
Moving home is a stressful process, so it’s certainly worth getting help not only during the move itself, but also ahead of time with tasks like decluttering. Our friendly team of clearance experts is on hand to help, so give us a call if you need some assistance.
